Commercial Agreement

To become a member of MMIX, follow these steps:

Application Process

Contact us to express your interest in joining MMIX. Fill out the "Member Application Form" and send it to subscribe@mmix.net.

After approval from the MMIX team, you will be granted "Associate Member" status.

Peering with MMIX

To establish a connection with our IXP, you'll need to prepare the following:

  • Complete the "Port Application Form" (signed by your Technical Head) and send to activation@mm-ix.net
  • Prepare transmission facilities up to the demarcation points at your chosen POP location
  • Ensure you have compatible transceivers for the IXP switch interface

Technical Requirements

Networking Setup

  • For direct peering with other members (bilateral), contact them directly
  • To accept all members' prefixes (Multilateral), set up BGP session with MMIX Route Servers
  • MMIX will verify your ASN(s) and IP Prefixes in the whois database
  • Route Servers will filter and allow only your authorized ASN(s) and Prefix(es)

Router Configuration

  • Use a dedicated BGP router for IXP connection (not your International Gateway router)
  • Ensure the router doesn't have International routes or default gateway
  • Downstream links for IP Transit should not directly connect to this router
  • Router should contain only your local routes and IXP's routes

Additional Prefixes

For additional ASN(s) and Prefix(es), please fill out the "Prefix Request Form" and send to noc@mm-ix.net.

MMIX Policy Restrictions

To ensure optimal performance and security for all members, MMIX enforces the following policies

Traffic Restrictions

Only local traffic is allowed through the IX. IP Transit traffic must not pass through this exchange point. This ensures all traffic exchanged is truly local and benefits all members equally.

ASN Requirements

Private Autonomous System Numbers (ASNs) are not permitted. All members must use public ASNs registered with the appropriate Regional Internet Registry (RIR).

Security Measures

MAC address filtering is enforced. Only subscribed peers' MAC addresses are allowed on the exchange. This prevents unauthorized access and maintains network integrity.

Port Requirements

Each Principal or Institutional Member must subscribe to at least one port service. This ensures commitment to the IXP community and proper resource allocation.

Prefix Advertising

Members are allowed to advertise ASNs and prefixes of their downstream networks. This facilitates comprehensive local routing while maintaining proper origin validation.

Hardware Requirements

MMIX switch ports are fiber interfaces supporting various SFPs. Media converters are not permitted. Members must provide compatible transceivers and necessary patch cords.

Member Responsibilities

The IXP provides transparent exchange with simple switching infrastructure. There is no filtering or security control at the IXP level. Each member is responsible for their own security controls and filtering as needed.

Compliance

All members must comply with these policies to maintain membership privileges. Regular audits may be conducted to ensure ongoing compliance with MMIX standards.

Security Considerations

  • Implement appropriate prefix filtering
  • Use secure BGP session passwords
  • Enable BGP monitoring and alerting
  • Consider implementing RPKI for route origin validation
